What is PDT, or photodynamic therapy, and how does it work?

PDT, or photodynamic therapy (photodynamic rejuvenation), is a photo-sensitive topical agent applied to the skin and activated by a light source promoting skin rejuvenation for acne treatments, acne scar treatments, anti aging treatments, rosacea treatments and more. This can be accomplished through either Blue light therapy or Red light therapy.

Blue light therapy, Red light therapy and Infrared light therapy are used to create our innovative LIGHTWAVE therapy system. Our versatile systems can address a variety of concerns and can be used for:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Facial rejuvenation
  • Anti aging treatment
  • Acne treatment
  • Rosacea treatment

When it comes to photodynamic rejuvenation or photodynamic therapy (PDT), Blue light and Red light therapy are key.

In response to the Blue light therapy of photodynamic rejuvenation, molecules within acne-causing bacteria produce singlet oxygen and free radicals that cause the bacteria self-destruct. This aspect of photodynamic therapy, or PDT, is critical, as only when bacteria are destroyed can skin rejuvenation and the normalization of cellular function takes place.

Red light therapy stimulates the skin and promotes the production of the energy source for cells known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). By increasing ATP, the production of elastin and collagen also increases and normal cellular function can be restored. Whether used with Blue light therapy or Red light therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is highly effective – for acne treatment, acne scar treatment, anti aging treatment, rosacea treatment, and many other skin concerns.
